Tara Anglican School for Girls

Cocurricular

Tara aims to provide an excellent all-round education for girls and offers an extensive range of co and extra curricular activities.

Sport

We recognise the benefits of girls playing sport, beyond the obvious health advantages and motor skills development. By playing one of 20 sports available, Tara girls develop team and school spirit, trust, teamwork and leadership skills, and have fun! Tara offers the following sports in Senior School:

Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic, Cheerleading, Funk, Rhythmic and Sports Aerobics), Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Snowsports, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Touch Football and Waterpolo.

Involvement in sport brings many advantages. Sport provides valuable life skills such as how to win and how to lose and enhances student self discipline. Girls who participate in sport at Tara find that they can improve academically and are able to develop skills in organisation as they juggle a number of commitments. They meet friends who they may not otherwise have met in their normal academic day, through the many team sports on offer.

Our Tara girls are intrinsically motivated and work well in teams and individually. Students participate in a wide range of individual and team sports both within School through the House system and in Inter-School IGSSA, state and national competitions.

Tara has a four House system: Crawford, Hake, Walker and Waugh. Sport is just one facet that utilises this model with Interhouse activities unifying students from across all year groups as they support one another in events such as the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. These sporting events allow the girls to work together and showcase their sense of House spirit. Senior students develop and enhance their leadership skills as they guide and encourage the younger girls.

Performing Arts

All students at Tara are offered the chance to experience the extraordinary opportunities and possibilities of drama, dance and music performance in a range of academic, co and extra curricular performance contexts.

At Tara, we place great importance on participating in the performing arts, giving girls the chance to discover the joys of music, song and dance, to enjoy the unique camaraderie of a cast or ensemble and to gain confidence by performing in front of an audience.

Past Tara productions performed at The Riverside Theatre have included: Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and Godspell. Year 11 girls are also offered the opportunity to perform in co productions with The King's School. Past co productions include: Mikado, Oliver and The Gondoliers.

We have choirs and instrumental groups where girls can perform and compete at School and Inter-School events and festivals. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in our renowned musicals or drama productions. Many of our girls enjoy and excel in the performing arts and each year take HSC Drama or Music electives; some achieve honours by selection for 'ENCORE' and 'OnSTAGE' which showcase top of state performances.

Tara’s teachers are there to recognise, nurture, assess and ultimately inspire each student to give to an audience, an effective and rewarding performance work.

Extra Subjects

At Tara, we have a large program of Extra Subjects that are taught by highly qualified teachers and coaches. We offer subjects in over twenty different areas which all incur moderate additional fees.

Girls are given the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom in subjects such as Music: (Pianoforte, Wind, String and Percussion instruments); Sport: (Tennis, Gymnastics, Cheerleading, Sports Aerobics); Dance and Speech Communication.

We encourage our girls to perform in concerts and competitions and support them to undertake public examinations (AMEB, Trinity) as required. Tara girls are offered these opportunities to pursue Extra Subject activity for leisure and enrichment.
