Christian Faith & Values

Underpinning Tara Anglican School for Girls are our strong commitments to an outstanding educational offering for girls and authentic Christian faith which values individuals and recognises their uniqueness. Our purpose is to be a Christian learning community, characterised by excellence, which encourages and empowers girls to achieve and serve in a dynamic world.

Tara has a strong and proud tradition as a Christian school in the Anglican tradition. As such we envisage education to be more than the impartation of knowledge, and rather the very formation (in our context) of young women. This means that the knowledge and skills that we foster are developed in direct connection with a Christian way of seeing the world and the practices and behaviours that accompany this. This development occurs within the context of a Christian community of care. In turn, our educational practices are strengthened by this approach which properly takes account of the whole person and not merely one's mind.

Christian faith is integrated into all aspect of school life, including the curriculum, the pastoral programs, our behaviours and friendships, and our leadership development. Our school values reflect this:

Christian Values

Affirmation

Ephesians 4:29: Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Service to Others

Matthew 20:26-28: Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Opportunity

John 10:10: ... I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Integrity

Micah: 6:8: And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

The Christian identity of Tara is also seen in direct ways. Every student attends a weekly Chapel service which is led by our Chaplain, Rev. Nicholas Russell and our Chaplaincy team. Chapel reflects the structure of traditional Christian worship while at the same time being interactive, creative and directed to the needs and challenges of the students of Tara. In 2017 we open our beautiful new Chapel building. The Chapel provides a space fitting to the worship of God and at the same time extremely useful for a variety of faith-based activities. The Chapel is located at the entrance to the school, showing the prominence of Christian Faith in our identity. It is also located in between our Junior and Senior sites, showing that our Christian identity links and unites us across age and location.

Students study the Bible in depth through Christian Studies classes. Many voluntary groups also exist and this includes our weekly 'Crusaders' groups, and several Bible Study groups. These groups offer deeper relationships between students in a faith context and the opportunity to explore questions of meaning and purpose. Our boarders have a weekly interactive chapel and two voluntary discussion groups.

As a Christian learning community, we want to encourage and empower young women. Our service learning program encourages our girls to recognise the contribution they can make to the lives of others through the use of their strengths, gifts, resources and knowledge in the service of those around them. The program is motivated by our understanding of God’s grace towards us and students develop empathy, compassion and purpose within the Tara school community, our local community, or global community. This program includes fundraising for nominated charities and by providing different experiences for the students.

It is our Christian framework that offers a deep, clear and meaningful Student Engagement and Development program in the Junior School and Senior School that aims to give each girl to opportunity to realise her potential and flourish in life.

As a Christian learning community, we welcome students and families from many different backgrounds and faiths into our school. Our hope for all our students is that they will begin to engage and think critically about the significant questions of the world and their place within it.
