Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) at Tara provides students with the foundations for adopting lifelong active and healthy living. PDHPE establishes opportunities for our girls to be confident in their decision making and relationships regarding their overall health and wellbeing. It encourages involvement in all forms of physical activity.
PDHPE is compulsory for all students at Tara in Years 7-10, as an elective (Physical Activity and Sports Studies) in Years 9 and 10 and as an HSC course in Years 11 and 12.
In Years 7-10, PDHPE provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for girls to make health enhancing decisions regarding issues critical for young people such as physical activity, nutrition substance use, personal relationships, safety, mental and sexual health. Movement experiences that are challenging and enjoyable, encourage active participation along with enhancing skill and confidence in a variety of physical and recreational pursuits. A PDHPE lesson at Tara could incorporate a role play on conflict resolution, the design of an advertisement to avoid smoking, filming and choreographing a Hip Hop Group dance performance or a minor game of skills in AFL. Teaching strategies are innovative and integrated across the practical and theoretical environment. The use of technology is embedded in each course with the use of e-workbooks and video analysis software in elective courses. An annual PDHPE Day is held in each Year 7-10 to focus on the needs of each year group. For example: Year 9 “Thrills without Spills” PDHPE day equips students with skills in personal protection strategies and resiliency in relationships and confidence in making health enhancing decisions regarding substance use.
Elective Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) extends Years 7-10 PDHPE by providing greater opportunities for involvement, analysis and encouragement of others to be involved in Physical Activity. Movement is the feature of PASS as Tara students participate in activities such as “The Amazing Bike Race", Circus Arts and Trapeze, Zumba and other specialised fitness classes. PDHPE is offered for the HSC and students are able to extend their depth of skill knowledge and experience in the science of performance and the promotion of health.
The dynamic teaching staff at Tara aim to maximize the participation of all students in every lesson with the goal for every one of our students to lead a fulfilled life that is active and healthy.
Connections and links to the wider community and opportunities are provided across all courses in PDHPE: 7-10 PDHPE, Elective Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) and HSC PDHPE. Within each of the PDHPE courses students are provided with community initiatives and gain certifications in Sports Medicine Awareness, Senior First Aid, St John Ambulance ‘Click to Save’ First Aid, RLSSA Bronze Level Lifesaving, Australian Sports Commission Beginning Coaching Principles, as well as practical programs in sport technology workshops, White Water Rafting, Beach Safety and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
