Tara’s Social Science Department encourages our students to be deep thinkers who actively engage with the physical, human, legal, business and economic environments. Our aim is to create the best teaching and learning for girls to investigate and critically think about people and processes that shape our world. Tara’s Social Science teachers provide lessons that are engaging and challenging. Tara students are successful in state and national competitions as well as HSC results and tertiary scholarships as they share our passion for understanding the world.
Fieldwork is crucial to all our subjects where students can undertake primary research and then report on what they have discovered.
At Tara fieldwork and simulations make the subjects come alive. An investigative approach is used in the Social Science subjects where students develop research questions, collect primary data and process, analyse and present it in oral and written forms. Through debates and discussion students also begin to explain patterns, evaluate consequences and contribute to the management of people, places and environments in an increasingly complex world.
Simulations include Market Day, where students prepare plans, budgets and marketing to attract customers. They sell goods and realise profits. Students and ‘Businesses’ are all vying for the coveted title of ‘Business Of the Year’ and ‘Most Innovative Product’.
Guest speakers from government, corporate and the universities contribute to the girls' understanding of the real world at both breakfasts and during lesson time.
The Australian Curriculum has been implemented at Tara starting in 2017 for students in Years 7-10. The Tara Social Science department’s lessons enrich and provide structure, so all students can learn according to their abilities and interests. All lessons help develop literacy and numeracy for NAPLAN.
In addition, Years 9 and 10 can study Elective Geography, Commerce and Interdisciplinary Studies. All Year 10 students study Financial Literacy which teaches Tara girls to be “gritty” when it comes to their employment and financial future. By “gritty”, we mean the girls become resilient, goal-oriented, ambitious, conscientious and motivated - able to overcome inevitable obstacles that lie on life’s path.
Senior Social Science courses offered at Tara are Economics, Business Studies, Geography and Legal Studies. Our girls have excelled in these subjects with Tara students placing in the top 5 students in NSW recently. Our current teaching staff all love learning and seek to support girls to deepen their understanding of the world as well as achieve the best possible HSC outcomes.
